I'm thinking of getting a state-issued ID that is not a driver's license. I hear you can get points against your license for a violation on a bike, but only if you carry the license. I'd rather not have that happen to me.
It is a good idea to have ID ready for the police. It speeds up the process, and there's no reason to give an officer a hard time if he asks you for ID.
