Well in that case perhaps a good option would be asking the guy to meet you at a high end bike shop that carries BMC's, so the frame can be checked out by the bike shop to verify that A) its authenticity and B) have professionals inspect it for damage.
FIFY. Saying the "the smart thing to do" implies that was is being done isn't smart, or perhaps suggests that the OP isn't smart and you are, because you know the smart thing to do. e.g. The smart thing for you to do would be to phrase your suggestions as such rather than spouting them as dogma.
