New To Road Biking --> Is this older bike worth it?

After spending quite a bit of time reading around on how to get a good budget road bike, a common theme that kept popping up is getting one on craigslist. As a student the less I can spend the better, however there's no way in he** I'm getting a department store bike (I was contemplating bikesdirect however). I had an original budget of ~600-700 dollars however after seeing this I'm quite tempted to just get since even after upgrades it'll be much cheaper than some of the other offerings I've seen thus far on craigslist.

Here's the bike stock:

Bikepedia link: 1999 Specialized Allez Sport - BikePedia
Blue Book Link: 1999 Specialized Allez Sport - New and Used Bike Value

Craigslist Link: (The person has added a carbon fork and handlebars).

I'm just curious if this bike is worth the 300 (which I hope it is) and how the Ultegra 6500 group set (albeit older now) compares with the newer ultegra, 105, etc.

Thanks for any input as I'm just a newbie at road biking (been riding my heavy mtn bike for years now) ><
