Absolutely! US395 is a 4 lane highway (2 each way) with a good sized shoulder, and it heads North and South through the Owens Valley. Also, the previous alignment of US395 is still there from Fort Independence to Aberdeen ... a few miles south of Big Pine. There is ZERO traffic on that road. Here is a short 45 mile ride from Independence to Bishop. I did this one a long time ago. Stayed in a hotel in Independence, rode to Bishop Saturday, stayed there for the night, then rode back the next day.

Or, you could start in Bishop and do some riding on the surrounding roads. Something like this:

That route takes you through some nice scenery and a narrow gauge railroad museum at Laws.
