Thanks for all the suggestions! I've taken everything apart. here are some pics:
I had a few issues. As Peugotlover mentioned, I need a French thread crank puller (seems it should have a square taper too from the pic above); I have no idea where to buy one of these. One of the caps on the crankset has a stripped hex. I've expoxed it, and will try to use a flathead to get it out:
I think my friend has the right cone wrenches to get the rear sprockets out (don't know what this is called). What do you guys think of the condition of the rear derailer, and the tires? My front and rear brake pads are also different.
Also, where can I get new ...these things for the shifting:
