Bikes: 1961 Ideor, 1966 Perfekt 3 Speed AB Hub, 1994 Bridgestone MB-6, 2006 Airnimal Joey, 2009 Thorn Sherpa, 2013 Thorn Nomad MkII, 2015 VO Pass Hunter, 2017 Lynskey Backroad, 2017 Raleigh Gran Prix, 1980s Bianchi Mixte on a trainer. Others are now gone.

Another vote for SPD type pedals and shoes. Prefer the M324 pedal which is platform on one side, SPD cleats on the other side so I can wear normal shoes for evening trips to the pub, grocery store, etc. They work with Shimano and with most Ritchey cleats. On one trip after several days of rain my cycling shoes were soaked but my trail runners were not, so on the first dry day I rode with the trail runner shoes while the cycling shoes had a chance to dry out.

But, on my foldup bike I use toe clips because the pedals I use have a quick release mechanism to remove the pedal from the cranks in seconds without tools, SPD pedals that use Shimano/Ritchey cleats are not available with that quick release mechanism.

But I have seen lots of long distance tourists (the type that currently call their bike and tent their home) that use platform pedals with bumps on the pedal that the shoe sole can grip better, sometimes with a loose strap over the shoe and sometimes without such a strap.
