I like my walking shoes when I'm touring, commuting, and running errands. Walking around is a large part of my bicycling style, so platform pedals with toe clips and straps (I agree with the metal comment above) are perfect for my riding style. And I'm happy to have have one less pair of specialized footwear on the floor when I'm at home. I've tried several options over the decades, and I think other options like cleats and plain platforms are fine for those who have decided to use them. They've made their decision based on their experience, style, closet space, and budget, all of which are different than mine.

This is probably the sort of response that should be automatically given whenever this question is asked. Some people have strong opinions on foot wear, and don't always agree.
Right now I am mostly running spd, but only because I lucked into four sets of them, so was able to make most of my bikes uniform. I might put straps back on this winter, because then I can wear a warmer shoe. Then I might not, because I am finding that my spd sandals cam be pretty warm with the right wool socks. That's right, I am not afraid to look like a dork in socks and sandals.
Sometimes I change pedals based on what my goals are for the trip. If I plan on lots of walking and want off bike casual I opt for platforms, with or without cages. Personally, I like the big plastic cages, because they are more comfortable and fit my feet better. I don't tighten them down, but like the feeling of them. The best way I can describe it for me is a "FOOT GO HERE" sort of feeling.
