It is possible to repack the rear wheel bearings with the freewheel un-removed.

Iirc, you need q-tips, be sure to clean the farside, then stuff in plenty of fresh grease.
And, gingerly place each bearing in the grease, and double check that they stay put, while you finish the more accessible side.

I'm not saying it is the best way, but it can be done.
