If the rings are not concentric with the spindle, you may be able to center them better by loosening the chainring bolts somewhat, turning the crank until the ring is at its most-forward position, and tap the front of it with a block of wood or a mallet to move it towards center. Do this a few times, gently, until you have worked the ring towards the center as much as possible.
