I can recall at least one trip down through El Paso heading for the Big Bend of the Rio Grande, on a botanical expedition to study the Cactaceae.
It was long ago enough that I felt comfortable going across the border into Juarez, where I bought switchblade knives for my engine crew.
Alpine, Texas is a swell place, as is the entire Big Bend national park. El Paso, not so much. I did not get lost in the rain in Juarez.
