I still think it is just fashion though, as all my buddies have problems with creaking bottom brackets, pedal bearings failing, replacing chains like crazy, replacing bottom brackets, wheels needing maintenance.

The two bikes I ride most of the time:

Colnago C40 with Campy Super Record, Rolf wheels, circa year 2000. Replaced the chain too many times, replaced cables once. Good going for 14 years, everything else still perfect.

Vitus 992, with Dura Ace 7700 circa 1999, Dura Ace 7700 wheels. Replaced cables once, still on original chain and cassette!! Everything else is still perfect after 15 years.

The above excludes consumables, being handlebar tape, tires and tubes.

I don't think the reliability is the same on the kit today???

BTW, Colnago weighs in around 17.75lbs, the Vitus around 19 lbs.
Cool story, but what's your point?

I can't figure out why you want to by a new bike, and then talk about how the new stuff isn't as good as what you have.
