Those guys are way smooth forward and backward - except Justin Williams and a few sprinters who are very tough wheel to follow.
Do you think smoother is a better way to ride? I know it conserves energy, but what if you can make your opponents have to match your accelerations and decelerations?

Think about it from a rider who:
-Is smaller than most riders
-Can out accelerate most riders
-Is fitter than most riders
-Is limited on top gear and top speed.

Causing opponents to accelerate / decelerate often hurts them more than him.
Taking them off their game by unpredictable movement (Justin Williams style) in the final corner and get the jump on them.
