If everyone applied that approach, then there would be virtually no high end bikes sold. Vast majority of road cyclists never race. (There are only 70,000 people with USA Cycling Licenses) Large percentage of people that do race never get past Cat 5. Another large percentage of people don't get past Cat 4, then you get a very large percentage of people like me that are Cat 3 lifers. Of the universe of road cyclists. The number of road cyclists that will ever be Cat 2's has to be below one tenth of one percent.

Then you have the whole don't race what you can't replace. In some ways it makes more sense for a recreational cyclist to buy an expensive bike than racers.
