In threads where drops and flat bars are discussed, there's a general consensus that drops are much more comfortable especially when riding distances, because of all the available hand positions. I know we don't think of "comfort" as something that's "efficient", but on a longer ride it can be.
On my 100 miler last year if I was more efficient I would not have hurt as much so I believe it.
