Lol, can you put the box next to the bike, tell them that they need to pack the bike in the box and that covers it? Or maybe they have boxes and styrofoam big enough to fit a bike into?
There's gotta be a way to insist that each bike gets packed into a box. What do they do with your tv?
In my experience, it's the only way to ensure that something doesn't get scratched up. In my case I'm willling to accept a scratch or two I my bikes, I don't care, but like I said for something where I do (the display on my tv) it's the single way I know of to keep fragile items from scratches.
