nice. glad you found it. i've run it this way on my MTBs for years without a problem. that said, a little piece of vinyl tape will ensure it doesn't unwrap. (i didn't bother, but it's not a bad idea.)
the weight savings is negligible, but why not drop the weight by removing a part that is not only non-essential but also annoying?
when you're 0.1 seconds up a hill on your next climb, use that time to think of me and give thanks. ;-)
