Haha. Old thread, but I think it's still a great topic and hope lots of modern users give feedback about modern pannier options. Also, I'm always surprised at tourers who don't use waterproof panniers. In any case, I have a set of Axiom Monsoons that have served me very well. I don't keep up with mileage that much, but I might have 500mi on them. In any case, they show NO wear so far, and seem very rugged. I've ridden with them in good rain and they showed no signs of letting in any water. I'm very confident in them. I tested them in the shower(much more water than rain) with the same results. They also haven't come loose once, and my friend and I have put our miles in on rails-to-trails trails, which have their share of large bumps. As I said, I'm completely confident in them. My friend uses Arkels. I don't know the model. His particular panniers are also waterproof and he's been completely happy with them. I wish I could share more details, but I have heard many stories of people happy with their Arkels. I have faith in the brand. I'm getting a set of Arkel Dry-Lights next based on the good reviews of the brand in general. The standard Arkel locking system is also the best I've seen. Mounting is incredibly simple and solid.
