Neither seems more appropriate than the other to me. Based on what folks actually use for randonneuring, pretty much anything in the general touring / road / franco-rando / cross bike realm is fine. What matters more is riding the one you find more comfortable, or easier to accessorize in the particular ways you personally find important.
