Guidance for building up my winter commuter.

Hello all, Ive been commuting 5-7 miles each way to work since this past spring, and I love it.

Im trying to gear myself up for commuting at least as much as possible through the winter now.

I have a few bikes I could utilize, and would like to know what you guys think I should go with.

First, Im in north TX, and the bad part of winter will likely be fairly short, but can get intense. Like heavy snow, high winds, negative temps. Its those days/weeks/months Im worried about. There will likely be alot of moderate days also though, and simply wet conditions.

I have two 90's model trek 800 mtb, one is stock, the other is a drop bar conversion frankenbike with 27" rims, and comfortable larger sized road tires on it.

I also just picked up a 07' specialized hardrock, which is stock.

I was intending on using the latter, which has very large, knobby tires on it. It also has front suspension though, and I am wondering if thats going to be a draw back. In my experience, I do not like having the suspension, unless I am riding trails and such. I could put a solid fork on it though.

I would assume a larger MTB tire would provide the best ride in ice and snow, but am not sure, as Ive never really ridden much on ice and snow. Not since I was a kid anyhow. Im I correct here?

Will a rear rack be a "good enough" rear fender? Also, will I NEED a front fender?

Im sure Ill learn alot from just getting out there and seeing what works and what doesnt, but its already getting cooler and wetter, so Id like to go ahead and get something ready.

Any opinions are appreciated.
