check and see if there's a bike co-op near you. I've been hanging out at our local one lately and see decent bikes go at pretty good prices. I don't know if all co-ops work the same (first one I've ever been around), but everything they decide to sell off gets a pretty good check over, so even if it's a department store bike you're not gambling as much.
