But from the look of their instructions they don't recommend changing bearing balls upon every servicing. I'm guessing the needle bearings mentioned in those DA pedals are taking up much of the load.
That's what the parts list sez, I think.

Looks like a couple of specialized tools are needed to take the pedal apart and adjust it. But I still have those Ultegras with the worn bearings. I think I might order the tools, get some bearings, and give it a try. What the heck?

Kinda doesn't make economic sense, though. The R540s don't cost much more than a set of new cleats, are just as smooth and about the same weight as the Ultegras. But there is something deep in my psyche that abhors just throwing things away for want of a few replaceable parts.

Speaking of which, I discovered something else last weekend about the SPD-SL pedals .... they make cleat covers! Gotta get some of those.
