Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

Unless the threads are really damaged, not just gritty and dirty, clean them out with an old toothbrush and some solvent to remove the grit. Run a pointed wood dowel or similar around the threads too.
