If the objection is safety based, wouldn't the answer be to educate rather than eliminate bicycles in general? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Oh yes, in several cities there has been a strong opposition by local bike advocacy groups on the basis that inexperienced users of the sharing programs presented a massive safety risk for all cyclists.
And as for getting cyclists off the road, last year there was a bill submitted in GA that had some pretty tight restrictions on where and how cyclists could use the road. Fortunately, we do have a couple of good advocacy groups that got the word out, and the bill was withdrawn before it got any traction. That is where real advocacy comes in.
Let's be honest, if we really wanted to advocate bikes as transportation, we'd be putting together a basic Bicyclists Bill of Rights and be lobbying to get it passed in every state, but that requires time, money and a coherent plan. I'm not sure you could get 10 people around here to agree on anything
