I prefer clipless for my road bike or when my day is tailored around cycling, but for commuting I just didn't want to get into a third different kind of shoes for every day.
What works for me is the standard platforms that came on my commuter/hybrid bike with power grips attached to them. I
LOVE the power grips; they're the next best thing to clipless. They fit loosely when your foot is oblique on the pedal, and tighten up when you straighten your foot (parallel with the direction of travel).
THese are power grips that come with their own pedals
Amazon.com : Power Grips High Performance Pre-Assembled Strap/Pedal Kit, Black : Bike Pedals : Sports & Outdoors (and the pedals are pretty similar to what came on my bike).
But you can also get the power grips separately and install them on your existing pedals.
