If it was on a 1992 they may have been mixing parts from the previous generation of DT shifter bikes. I have set of wheels I can use with an 8 speed cassette so maybe I'll use them and save the original wheels which are beautiful.
Check the rear hub, if it is a FH-6402 it will take an 8 speed cassette and you can use those wheels.
