For what conditions does one work better than the other? I'm going to start learning how to clean my chain. Which lube should I use?

I'm ride a few times a week, usually not in wet conditions, but my drivetrain gets really filthy. I plan to ride somewhat during cold weather, but will ride most during the warm seasons.

I'm new to bike maintenance and chain cleaning. Is there is site with a guide on how to do it?
