Campag4life was saying. You get too much drop when you downsize to keep the top tube at the right length. And that's why he recommends going up a size and using a shorter stem. I don't like short stems either, but I see his point.
This is exactly what I did with my Cannondale. I'm 5'9 and moved from a 54 to a 56 and swapped the stem for a shorter one, worked brilliantly.
