Try several million in all other parts of the world. Australia has never had drive-through tellers.

Like tractorlegs, my banking is done almost entirely electronically. Payroll is deposited directly into my account. I pay utilities on-line after receiving their accounts by email (no post at all); most of those have been set up to be automatic payments. Any cash I need, I take out at an ATM, or get a "cash-out" addition to the payment I make for my groceries; in fact, the two biggest supermarkets here don't even need a purchase for a cash transaction on a card, and it saves banking fees.

Even here in North America at the moment, I haven't needed to go into a bank itself at all. My wallet has hardly had any cash in it at since I arrived.

As to the issue of being refused service at a drive-through, it's the bank's property and the bank's rules. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. Or park your bike and go inside like the teller suggested... there is, after all, a bike rack out the front (which probably came about through a bunch of whining by bicycle riders).
