I'm not saying it's "physically" safer on streets than my particular MUP. I'm saying it's statistically safer based upon my own experiences commuting and riding compared to the local MUP, at least during peak hours.

But there is a problem with your statistics. Maybe you should compare statistical 'deaths' of MUP versus road. I think you will find a lot more die riding bikes on the road than they do on a MUP because of conservation of momentum we both learned in school. Sounds as though you have a busy MUP to ride on or not conducive to the type of riding you like or the speed you like to ride. Riding through rush hour in down town NYC on the road maybe the same problem. So maneuvering and changing speed constantly on a MUP isn't conducive to your ACL health and so you go out on the road. Many prefer the road for the same reason you do. To me riding on a slightly busy MUP is a bit of a nuisance, I agree. But all road riding isn't the same either which is the counterpoint.
