MattInFla, just curious...have you ever tried 'slow and steady'? Hit the hill at the bottom with just a minor bit of speed, very quickly shift into the lowest gear you have, then just grind it out 'slow and steady' to the top.
i try this but i am out of breath within seconds! there is a really steep bit of my route and it works better for me to get it over with as fast as possible. i sprint up it and then lower the gear and just about make it over the top. just as well its only short. i'd say about 20 seconds of pain and then relief

hoping it gets easier as the weeks go by but no such luck yet
