Whatever you do, if you get the pedals with the jagged pins on them and go out hucking, be sure to wear shin-guards. It hasn't happened to me yet but my kid has some platforms on his BMX bike and I've had to clean out some pretty scary looking boo-boos on his shins more than once from his foot coming off the pedal.
