I was in the same situation. It's probably not practical trying to replace the HID lamp with an LED. LEDs are best supplied using a switching current regulator, need very good heat sinking so as not lose intensity from getting hot, and have much different reflector/optics requirements. I just got an 700 lumen self contained LED light for $120 and tossed the Niterider. Actually I got two; for 1400 lumens when needed, can put one on the bars and one on the helmet, etc....
