No sure about the AG 38... I'm hoping 34 will be enough. A Japanese friend mentioned that for touring you needed 1 to 1, so 32 should be enough (as the front is 32). We'll see. I removed the white lettering from the large cog on a Shimano MEGA RANGE the other day
32 to 34 is a nice low gear- It looks kind of goofy if you've got a 14-28 and then big 34 bailout cog- but it totally makes sense- and Shimano's branding on it is just gaudy. I used a Sharpie to color over it, but I'm sure that will wear off.
