It's interesting to hear about rain tires for bikes, I guess I've always believed Sheldon Brown when he says that bicycles don't hydroplane and bicycle treads (road bikes) really provide no benefit. I'm not saying one article defines all truth, but it makes sense to me. If you haven't seen it, here's a link:

I have no problem riding in rain but I am careful of steel plates, metal grates and paint on the road. In addition, I am extra cautious. I don't know about hydro-planing but I do know that there are differences between tires. I use Michelin Pro Race tires and they are great in the rain, but I once used Vredestein Fortezza and in my opinion in rain they are suicidal (probably because I had them at 145 psi)
