No, it's not. I cook a big dish for a week of leftovers (lunches) and even at it's cheapest it's still £2-3/meal.
1kg good basmati rice is £2 (I buy good 10kg bags for £20). 100g of basmati is roughly 300kcal. 8 dishes from 1kg = 125g (375kcal rice)
Reasonable quality meat on sale (low-fat but not organic) is £4.00/400g. Usually requires 800g for 1kg rice = 100g meat (200kcal meat)
Seasoning (usually curry/indian/thai/etc...) £2 if I go cheap pre-made mixture (£4 if I buy all fresh) ... min calories
Chutney (usually 2 types) ... £3 if I go as cheap as possible and don't make fresh
Fresh coriander (£1 for enough 8 dishes).
That's as cheap as I'll go ... a veggie is more expensive.
In total, 8 dishes of 600kcal (the net loss from cycling) for £2+£8+£2+£3+£1 = £16 or £2/serving (like I said in the post above).
The cost of Cauliflower, Broccoli, Parsnip, Root celery, celery, tomato, etc... easily surpasses £8.
Usually, I don't like to cook with processed sauces/mixes, so the cheapest cost is usually £3-4.
I've been doing a lot of veggie tagines which is quite nice...
Garden Vegetable Tagine |moroccan style, gluten free, vegan
which is nice, but not cheap if one has a proper £100 tagine "dish."
