I am not saying that you should fear carbon, but I am saying that if you do fear carbon, you shouldn't ride it. I am actually not a big fan of it after my brief tenure with a BMC SL02. The bike rode fine, but when the first rock bounced off of it and it echoed like a distributor cap, I decided that it wasn't for me.
After my crash, I threw out the carbon fork on the SS. I had the steel one sitting around, I did not think that the fork took any real damage (it was involved in the contact with my friends rear wheel, but then spent the rest of the ride pointed at the heavens), but I didn't want to wonder about it every ride ever after.
It's like @LAJ's hip. He could spend every ride thinking about the hardware sawing away at the bone in his thigh, chewing it's way slowly to freedom, or he could just ride his bike. I bet he rides his bike.
That hasn't even crossed my mind, nor is it even in the realm of possibilities. It was tougher to get on my bike after they plated up the clavicle, to be honest. Not to mention, the plate bugs me, as I can see it.
