I am a bike rep and walk into over 130 shops in 4 states. Most of my dealers/friends know what I like/want. They call me when something pops up and they either send me pics or get the owners info and I take it from there. I always travel with my receiver rack on the bumper even if I don't take my bike with me because I'm always bringing something home.
Sounds like you have an advantage over us mere mortals. And, reminds me of back in the day when I worked in a hobby shop specializing in radio controlled models. People used to bring in all kinds of RC stuff that they no-longer wanted, much of it they were willing to let go of for a song. They used to come in, asking what the current value was, and where they could advertise the stuff for sale.
We always gave a fair evaluation of price and often picked off the best stuff for amazing prices. I got a lot of my helicopter stuff that way (the only way I could afford to fly copters, because crashes are expensive).
