I would recommend moving up the to the Edge 500/510 though. Even if you're not planning on a HRM, at least you can run speed/cadence in the future. The 500 also has a barometric altimeter so you'll get more reliable elevation data while you're riding.
I bought the Garmin Edge 510 last year, purchased without heart monitor or cadence sensor. I added a heart monitor this year. I'm very happy with it. The 510 allows you to modify stats to display on the ride, I included elevation gain in my standard display. Here is a screenshot of Garmin Connect with elevation stats.



Also, Garmin Connect can auto transfer ride data to other sport apps like Endomondo or Strava. With the Bluetooth connection on the 510 to my phone, I just finish the ride click save and the rest just happens (most of the time).
