Speaking of doosh:
We have a reporting server that was crashing in the mornings during heavy workload. Seemed to be caused by a battery on a disk controller or something. Battery on order.
2:00 in the afternoon, a guy comes over and asks me if there's a problem with "Server A", because he lost his connection. "Crap" I think, now it's happening during the workday. Sure enough, I can't connect either.
I go into our computer closet, and "Bill" our desktop and basic maint guy has it pulled out of the rack with the cover off, but looks to still be running. All the green lights look happily blinking.
Me: "Bill, did you shut this down, or reboot or something ?"
Bill: "No, just looking at it. Wanted to see where the battery was."
Me: "Hmmm, we can't connect, but looks like it's running ok."
Bill: "Well, I had to unplug the network cable so I could pull it out all the way, do you want me to plug it back in ?"
Me: Facepalm
heh
At a large financial company one of our servers went down (we had placed our servers in their data centers to provide them with our services). Ends up someone doing maintenance had yanked on something, pulling the power cord out of the server.
I still think this is great. I first saw it when I was working for that above company and someone sent me the link and said "this totally reminds me of what I see you doing!". Minus email stuff, plus linux stuff. I didn't play Halo, I played counterstrike, and I didn't play at work. It was originally only on their website and I'm going to say it was 2006 or 2007, whenever Halo was hot stuff.
