You would most certainly not wish to provoke an altercation with them but we never feel threatened, anxious or anything other than as neighbors using and enjoying the same resource. A little respect and good manners are all that are required.
The constant fretting over “Rights” and the general Paranoia in A&S is a symptom of something deep seated and anti-social IMHO.

As I’ve said I could believe that,
IF it had happened only once. But from the OP’s description they blocked the trail in more than one place. How does that jell with them “forgetting” where they are? Also as I said, I don’t disagree that the OP could have handled things better, but considering that the group had blocked the trail not just once but at least twice they were no longer entitled to such considerations.
