Article is so true. I started riding on a hybrid in May. Went out on my first Saturday ride in july, was dropped like an old hat about 10 miles in to 40 and soloed my way back, though there were two guys who periodically came back to check on me. That encouragement was enough. Other than Saturdays where I've been on a charity ride or out of town, I'm out there ever since. I got a secondhand roadie in August, and as of two weeks ago, I'm no longer with the slow group at all, and actually lead a 50 mile 14-16mph group out and back!

It's scary to go out with all those pro looking cyclists when you are clueless, but I have found by and large cyclists to be friendly and supportive, and also willing to kick your ass when you need it!
