Because of some other threads I started paying attention to what other cyclists do when I am driving to ride starts (I could ride, but that means getting up way too early). What I noticed was over half ride in a very dangerous fashion. Right now I'm really amazed that the numbers for deaths and serious injury are so low. IF all the riders I saw were riding safely then perhaps the recent reports would bother me. But not the way things stand right now.
