Bikes: All 70s and 80s, only steel.

Just a quick two-bits: I use a jar with paint thinner for a hardcore cleaning, then scrub the chain down with some Simple Green, warm water and a toothbrush. Once I understood how to properly lube my chain (for a quick tutorial, go to http://www.sheldonbrown.com), it's really only needed the occasional wipe down with a rag and some more lubing. A full cleaning should only be necessary with really dirty chains that aren't being maintained well. It's just so much easier to wipe and re-lube once a week or so. And see sheldon's site: you don't need to cover the thing, it only makes it that much gunkier and dirtier.
