I recommend clipless pedals and front and rear brakes. It's safer and you can ride faster than brakeless.

OP, you can't think too much about the skid, you have to just commit to doing it. Stand up, lean forward and lock the cranks. Don't think, just DO IT! Brakes will definitely make it easier to do and once you get the hang of it, you can reduce/stop using the brakes.

You can also lower your gear inches to make it a lot easier to skid; just until you get the hang of it. Put a 20T cog on the back and you'll be skidding in no time.

After wearing out tires way faster than you anticipated may persuade you to skid less often and you'll appreciate having brakes.
