I guy in a pickup realized I was having problems and rolled up beside me and called the dog. The dog ran around to the driver's side of the pickup and the driver kept the dog occupied with the truck between the dog and the bike so I could remount and put on some distance. After cresting the hill and being well out ahead of the dog, the driver pulled up along side of me and waved.
I had a similar episode. I was on a rural road and got chased down by a pack of 4 large dogs. They were rested, I was tired, and I had to stop and dismount. A pickup driver intervened and drove alongside me screening me from the dogs until I was out of their territory and on a descent.

I also found myself at a 2-way stop trying to cross a busy arterial going uphill. It was around sunset, visibility wasn't that good, and I just couldn't get a big enough gap in traffic to cross. I was stuck about 10 minutes. A lady driving a big SUV escorted me at my pace until I could get across.
