how does one depict the quality of the bearing surfaces?

These are incredible hubs. I got them from a patient of mine who's husband passed in the mid 80's. These hubs had sat since then. When she gave them to me, they were still laced up (to some shot tubeless rims), and I was amazed how smoothly the hubs spun. I guess that's why these have held their value after all of these years.

Also, still having difficulty finding date code. What format should I be looking for?
You should see something on the locknut - now it's small when the lettering was moved to the outside of the locknut, as it has to fit in between the "ridges". With my old eyes magnification helps. But you'll see "CAM" and a date code like "81". After '84 it gets odd, i.e. "11" = 1985, etc.

To depict the bearing surfaces in pictures, the only way is to disassemble enough to show that there is no wear on the cone.
