There are lots of different types of cranks and BBs, so I don't think there's a "yes-no" answer to that question. Find a crank you like, then see what BB options there are for that one. If you don't like the options, repeat for crank choice # 2.
Your method makes sense. The important thing regarding OP's underlying requirement is that many if not all all the aluminum crank options that have been listed for OP are compatible in some way with threaded BB shells. It may be a square taper BB/crank or a threaded-in outboard bearing cup BB/crank, or something else, but they will all be compatible with the threaded BB shell.
