So I picked up this Twinn off of craigslist for a quick summer project restoration. I have never ever restored a bike before so this was tougher than i thought.
Started by taking everything apart and assessing the damage. Then Started de-rusting and polishing all the easy parts. Cleaned and reused all small parts, screws, bolts, etc. Ball bearings were still in great shape. Derusted and painted the bottom of the seat. Re-used everthing except for the rivets that held the cover of the cushion. I had to replace with a bolts.
Then took apart the rims. This was the hardest part as it was such in a bad rust but I was determined to save it. I removed all the rust as much as possible then painted with rustoleum to protect it. I also had to protect and paint the bottom of the fenders because of the really bad rust. The only thing that I replaced was the tires and spokes. I wanted to save the spokes but I couldnt even take them out it was so badly rusted. I had to use heavy duty wire cutters to remove them.
Then worked on the frame. Sadly the frame was painted over 3 times by previous owners so there was no way i could save the original paint. Stripped ALL paint and chose red as my color. Getting all the old paint out was HAARD
I tried to save the chain, but there were so many cracks i just bought new ones.
New tires and rim guard.
New rim spokes .
New brake cables.
New paint.
Everything else is the same from when i bought it.
Let me know your thoughts - good or bad. My feelings wont get hurt. It's not perfect, but I feel pretty proud of it.
