Didn't an episode of Myth Busters show how to rip a phone book in half? Pretty sure that was an episode where they interwove the pages of 2 NYC phone books and by doing so would create a friction bond preventing the books from being pulled apart.
It all depends on the grip and angle of that first tear. I watch spectators from the audience thinking they can try their own method and humorously fail. I'd have to youtube that Myth Busters, havent seen that episode.
