Your five categories are fine with me, and I treat them as such:
1) Mass market - Generally, not my interest, so I don't have any.
2) Distinctive - I prefer these, and build them the best way I see fit, reflected in my herd choices.
3) Iconic - Ex: Ironman, enough said. No guilt no matter what I do to it or how I build it, but I'd like them close to mint.
4) Exotic from a master builder - Not "lost on me," but little interest on my part. I'd build one and ride it, no problem.
5) Historically significant - I don't want the responsibility or accusations of blasphemy, or the argument.
Pretty much sums up my feelings. My next build is a Peugeot PX 10. The frame, cockpit and brakes will be showroom stock. The crank will get a triplitizer and a granny gear. The wheels will be high flange Campy with a seven speed Suntour Winner freewheel. It will probably get Japanese derailleurs from the '70's. All of the personal features could be reversed in the future.
